State Garden Show Wurzburg 2018

Wurzburg, Germany

The Landesgartenschau 2018 ( State Garden Show) in Wurzburg was realized on the premises of the former US military compounds, the Leighton-Barracks, which is today the new urban district called Hubland.

At one end of the previous airstrip, right next to the main loop road, called the “Belt Walk”, low walls invite the visitors to sit and relax and at the same time provide a view on a stretched, shallow pool of water.

Alternately springing fountains of water flood the stones inside the pool time and again: Shell Limestone, quarried and cut to size in Kirchheim, south of Wurzburg. Many of the stones still have their natural crust, some a sawn surface. About 180 tons of stones were used in the pool. Fossils, set into some of the stones, bear reference to the origin of the stone: the primeval ocean which covered the area millions of years ago.
